Mechanical Engineering

Behind each machine you see, there is a brain of mechanical engineer!

Mechanical Engineering is believed to be the broadest and oldest branch in engineering disciplines. The focus of mechanical engineering discipline is on the design, manufacturing of all types of mechanical devices. It involves the application of heat and energy, materials, sciences, mathematics and all fundamental principles of engineering.  When compared with other branches, this branch is flexible, broader and has an individuality. A mechanical engineer has a wide range of opportunities available from all the mechanical devices, machines, systems used under the earth, ship technology, aviation, robotics, space vehicles, nuclear power, missiles, arms, weapons and so on. I have also seen some mechanical engineers involved in Information Technology too.  Mechanical Engineers can involve in
  • Research
  • Design
  • Development
  • Manufacturing
  • Testing
of machines, engines, refrigerators, air conditioners, combustion engines, gas turbines, and any mechanical devices. It can also include machines that produce power and energy, escalators, industrial and domestic elevators, machine tools and even robots.

Mechanical engineers are responsible to integrate both theory, analysis and design of any system or process or machinery or devices. In the modern mechanical world, computers do most of the job for the mechanical engineers. Mechanical engineers always take up challenging jobs in designing the machines. This includes automobiles, aircraft, wind turbines, etc.

Some of the mechanical engineering areas are:

Basic Engineering: this is design, development, testing and manufacturing of tools or machines for basic use. It could be either industrial or domestic. These are common machines which we see like refrigerators, air conditioners, etc.

Engineering & Technology Management: With all the above qualifications and experiences, a mechanical engineer can turn out as a manager in technology and engineering.

Energy Conversion: Those who are interested in the conservation and conversion of energy. Hydroelectric, nuclear power plants, operation on fossil fuels, etc. are some among them. Mechanisms used in general automobiles are also part of this.

Environment & Transportation: Mechanical engineers play a critical role in today’s scenario to save the world from environmental pollution, by designing efficient systems in transportation, developing fuel efficient vehicles, etc.

Materials & Structures: this is primarily on the materials that is used for the production and manufacturing of the devices and machines. They should learn how to integrate various materials to get the best finished product.

Energy Resources: Some of the mechanical engineers are also capable of discovering new sources of energy like solar, wind, thermal, etc.

Manufacturing: This is mainly in manufacturing of the machines and tools

Systems & Design: This area is again the design of any mechanical devices. This will also involve computer aided manufacturing and computer aided design.
