Aerospace engineers design, test, and supervise the manufacture of aircraft, spacecraft, and missiles. Those who work with aircraft are called aeronautical engineers, and those working specifically with spacecraft are astronautical engineers.
Aerospace engineers develop new technologies for use in aviation, defense systems, and space exploration, often specializing in areas such as structural design, guidance, navigation and control, instrumentation and communication, and production methods. They also may specialize in a particular type of aerospace product, such as commercial aircraft, military fighter jets, helicopters, spacecraft, or missiles and rockets, and may become experts in aerodynamics, thermodynamics, celestial mechanics, propulsion, acoustics, or guidance and control systems.
They often use computer-aided design (CAD) software, robotics, and lasers and advanced electronic optics. They also may specialize in a particular type of aerospace product, such as commercial transports, military fighter jets, helicopters, spacecraft, or missiles and rockets. Aerospace engineers may be experts in aerodynamics, thermodynamics, celestial mechanics, propulsion, acoustics, or guidance and control systems.
Aerospace engineers typically are employed in the aerospace product and parts industry, although their skills are becoming increasingly valuable in other fields. For example, in the motor vehicles manufacturing industry, aerospace engineers design vehicles that have lower air resistance and, thus, increased fuel efficiency. In Aerospace Engineering, equal importance is given for design, manufacturing, testing and other phases in the development of the aircraft.
In the present scenario, more and more private players are being involved in the aero industry, especially the passenger airlines. Aerospace Engineers have opportunities in the defence too. It is it not in the aircraft area, but in developing missiles, satellite launch vehicles, space crafts, etc. One of the important reasons for the slow growth of job industry for aerospace engineers is that to join any industry, security is important.
This area earlier was called as the aeronautical engineering where the study was confined or limited within the earth’s atmosphere. When it started moving to the outer space, the area was renamed as aerospace that includes the aircraft within the boundary of the earth and the outer area including the orbits.
Anyone can join M.Tech specializations in Aerospace Engineering after doing the B.Tech Aerospace / Aeronautical / Mechanical / Electrical engineering. The important areas covered are Fluid Mechanics, Theoretical Physics, Equation of Motion. The other important studies include Avionics, Material Science, Acoustics, Control Engineering, Mathematics, etc.
